Ho letto… A street cat named Bob

"A street cat named Bob" di James Bowen fa sicuramente parte di quel filone di libri sul rapporto tra l'uomo e il proprio amico peloso che stanno uscendo in questi anni. Finora l'unico altro libro del genere che avevo letto era il pregevolissimo "E poi chi lo porta a spasso il cane" di Edmondo Berselli, uscito postumo dopo la morte del giornalista. Questo libro è stato anche tradotto in italiano ed è uscito con il titolo "A spasso con Bob". La storia di Bob e James, storia reale e molto attuale, mi ha coinvolto moltissimo per i temi trattati: due anime che si incontrano, l'uno ferito e malconcio, l'altro che cerca di disintossicarsi. Dopo l'incontro con Bob "The Cat" James diventa più responsabile, perché ora c'è un'altra creatura di cui si deve occupare oltre a se stesso.Bob sembra essere ciò che fa riemergere James dall'invisibilità: è la star delle strade, l'amico fedele, il gatto speciale, l'unica certezza nella vita di James, l'outsider, il fuoricasta. Le persone che si fermano per strada per accarezzare Bob cominciano finalmente a vedere James. Non voglio raccontare nulla della storia, perché è già stato scritto tantissimo. Mi sono davvero goduta l'inglese semplice e chiaro di questo autore, perché i concetti che esprime sono davvero immediati, senza fronzoli, senza giri di parole. L'autore è stato affiancato da un consulente della casa editrice, ma ascoltandolo parlare nei video che riporto più avanti, ho riconosciuto il suo stile. Voglio riportarvi qualche citazione; troverete in fondo a questo post anche qualche video relativo a questa bella storia piena di umana felinità. Se deciderete di leggerlo, vi auguro davvero una buona lettura.

You can take the cat off the street, but you can’t take the street out of the cat. A lot of cats like to go out for a walk with their owners,’ one told me. ‘They like to go for a walk in the park or for a short stroll down the street. But I have to say Bob’s a bit unusual isn’t he?’ There were times when I wondered whether Bob and I had some kind of telepathic understanding. He could definitely read my mind sometimes, and seemed to be doing so now. He knew that I needed him so he was a constant presence, hanging around me, snuggling up close when I invited him but keeping his distance when I was having a bad time. Every now and again, I’d have moments of lucidity and clarity. At one point I remember thinking that I really understood why so many people find it so hard to kick their drug habits. It’s a physical thing as well as a mental thing. That battle of wills that’s going on in your brain is very one-sided. The addictive forces are definitely stronger than those that are trying to wean you off the drugs. Bob didn’t need drugs to get through the night. He just needed his companion: me. And at that moment I decided that was all I needed too. All I needed was Bob. Not just tonight, but for as long as I had the privilege of having him in my life. My view is that we should all take a bit from every religion and philosophy. I’m not a Buddhist but I like Buddhist philosophies, in particular. They give you a very good structure that you can build your life around. For instance, I definitely believe in karma, the idea that what goes around, comes around. I wondered whether Bob was my reward for having done something good, somewhere in my troubled life.
